Even a little caffeine in pregnancy may harm baby, study finds

Mon, Nov 3, 2008 (Reuters) — Pregnant women who consume caffeine — even about a cup of coffee daily — are at higher risk of giving birth to an underweight baby, researchers said on Monday.

The new findings published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) also linked any source of caffeine, including that from tea, cola, chocolate and some prescription drugs, to relatively slower foetal growth.

The findings are the latest in mounting evidence indicating the amount of caffeine a person consumes may directly impact one’s health, especially when pregnant.

In January, U.S. researchers found that pregnant women who drink two or more cups of coffee a day are at twice the risk of having a miscarriage as those women who avoid caffeine.

Babies born underweight are more likely to develop a range of health conditions when they grow older, including high blood pressure, diabetes and heart problems.

Women who drank one to two cups of coffee daily, or between 100-199 milligrams, had a 20 percent increased risk of having a baby of low birth weight, the study found. This was compared to women who consumed less than 100 milligrams daily.

“Caffeine consumption during pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of foetal growth restriction and this association continued throughout pregnancy,” Justin Konje at the University of Leicester in Britain and colleagues wrote.

“Sensible advice would be to reduce caffeine intake before conception and throughout pregnancy.”

Konje and his team — which included researchers from the University of Leeds — looked at 2,645 women at an average age of 30 who were between 8 and 12 weeks pregnant.

The women reported an average caffeine consumption during pregnancy of 159 milligrams per day, lower than new recommended limits of 200 milligrams in Britain.

The likelihood of having a low birth weight baby rose to 50 percent for women who consumed between 200 milligrams and 299 milligrams each day, about two to three cups of coffee.

The impact was about the same as from alcohol and the association with low birth weight was maintained throughout a woman’s pregnancy, the study found.

Even small amounts may prove harmful but Konje said in a telephone interview the best advice was to limit caffeine consumption to below 100 milligrams a day.

“We couldn’t say that there was a lower limit for which there is no effect,” he said. “My advice is if possible to reduce caffeine intake to a minimum. You have to be realistic because you can’t ask people to stop taking caffeine.”

Allah knows..

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim….

I’m touched with this song, i found when ‘youtube’-ing :) Yusuf Islam’s songs..

Title: Allah knows, by Zain Bikha

When you feel all alone in this world
And there’s nobody to count your tears
Just remember no matter where you are
Allah knows, Allah knows.

When you’re carrying a monster load
And you wonder how far you can go
With every step on that road you take
Allah knows, Allah knows.

Chorus:
(Cause) No matter what, inside or out
There’s one thing of which there’s no doubt
Allah knows, Allah knows.

And whatever lies in the heavens and the Earth
Every star in this whole universe
Allah knows, Allah knows.

When you find that special someone
Feel your whole life has barely begun
You can walk on the moon shout it to everyone
Allah knows, Allah knows.

When you gaze with love in your eyes
Catch your glimpse of paradise
And you see your child take the first breath of life
Allah knows, Allah knows.

Chorus
When you lose someone close to your heart
See your whole world fall apart
And you try to go on but it seems so hard
Allah knows, Allah knows.

See we all have a path to choose
Through the valleys and hills we go
With the ups and the downs never fret never frown
Allah knows, Allah knows.

Chorus 2x
Every grain of sands in every desert plants
He knows…
Every sheet of palm, every closed hand
He knows…
Every sparkling tear on every eye lash
He knows…
Every thought I had and every word I share
He knows…
Allah knows…

food for thoughts..

My senior said to me yesterday “There’s a difference between people who experience big problem then make it small and a person who make a problem bigger” .. before he said that, he asked me how am i doing after joining new team, then i answered him promptly “Tough!” :) of course I’ll be getting “ceramah free” hehe.. after all, from his free speech i know one thing, we need to see one thing (or problem) as simple as possible, have a good mind setting first, then the problem will become simpler! start with a good niat .. Allah will help us all the way.. InsyaAllah..

——————————–

A conversation last evening:-

A - yesterday i watched a bad table manner.. in front of my eyes…when i had a lunch with 30 more people

Me - (I blink my eyes..curious to know .. gossip)

A - there were 2 ‘auww’ sat beside me, very irritating.. Malay guy you know!

Me - Really aa?

A - during the lunch i felt very ‘geli’ ! until we have finished the lunch, then came the best part

Me - What what?! (sibuk je aku nih!)

A - one of the ‘auww’ , has leftover in his plate, and tapau his leftover (food) with additional of  others’ leftovers! so awfull!

Me - Really aa.. that’s very embarrasing (plus they were in high class restaurant)

A - yes.. must be his mom didn’t teach him a proper table manners..

suddenly his phone rang, and he left me to continue my loads of work.. (at last!)

A conversation on the way home…

Me - hubby, you know what’ story of today (becoz ’A’ used to come to my cubic, and chat with me haha!)

Then i told my hubby all the story.. and of course i have the same perception as ‘A’

but my hubby had different thought….

Hubby - Maybe that guy has a money problem, need to tapau all the foods, we never know what one’s problem, his background.. or maybe he wants to donate to other needy people.. just because of table manners, he cannot do what he wants.. just think, he has a good intention.. (WOW!)

and..end up i embarrased myself, he was right.. thank you sayang for remind me.. then, i changed topic all the way to home! hehe.. :)

Kalau nak buat scaling, yang kat kaki nyamuk tuh adalah tahi cicak. So, fikirkan la besar mana nyamuk tuh.
